D LC, health regeneration, iron sights— Human Revolution changed a lot from Deus Ex, so what would the original game
be like if it was made the same way? These ques-
tions inspired modder Ceski to create Unreal
Revolution, which he describes as “a humorous
look at the transformation of the video game
industry in the past 10 years.”
The mod takes the form of an extra
level of Deus Ex, in which JC Denton
flies in to rescue Tracer Tong from
captivity, even though he hasn’t
bought the right DLC package
yet. Donning the augmented
reality goggles sends Denton into
a world of yellow tints and pointy
beards in his quest to rescue his
friend from imprisonment.
Ceski sees Unreal Revolution as an affectionate parody. He says he “really enjoyed”
Human Revolution, but found it funny and inter-
esting to examine the changes between the two
games. “Should melee attacks be replaced with
non-interactive cutscenes?” he asks. “I’m not
necessarily against such decisions, but I’ll admit
they give me pause.”
Gamers seem to have got the right idea, with
Ceski telling me the response has been “extremely
positive, regardless of personal opinions on topics
like DLC and classic versus modern game
mechanics.” Even Eidos Montreal developers got
the joke and shared the mod with each other.
Originally the mod was just going to be a
means for Ceski to create a You Tube video
( bit.ly/unrealrev) to share online, but
shortly after it went up, he was
inundated with requests. “I didn’t
expect ‘ho w was this done?’ or ‘is
there a mod?’ to be the most
common feedback,” he says. “I
wanted to fulfill those requests,
so I spent a few hectic days
stitching the mod together.”
Like the best satire, Unreal
Revolution makes us think as much as it
makes us laugh. Despite being made as a joke,
the iron-sighted combat rifle makes gunfights
more fun than the original Deus Ex’s clunky
combat. Perhaps we have learned a thing or t wo
