any of it in Half-Life 2—or at least there wasn’t,
until Action Half-Life 2 came out.
Back in the dark old days of PC gaming,
when our desktops where powered by
dinosaur treadmills, some modders
who watched way too many John
Woo movies asked themselves
why FPS games weren’t like that.
And suddenly there was Action
Quake 2. Now gamers could leap,
kick off walls, roll, kung fu kick
and, most importantly dive sideways while firing twin pistols (
preferably through a window).
Action Half-Life 2 is the most recent entry in the
series, and it’s just been updated to the post-Orange Box version of the Source engine, complete with a massive amount of bug-fixes and the
addition of nearly all the missing features from
earlier Action mods.
It’s been a long while since Quake 2, and the
EVAN SAYS...
Realism can be
great, but so
can needlessly
belly flopping
‘cuz it looks
cool.
Action mods haven’t really changed that much,
but that just means their mechanics are now
superbly balanced. The degree of movement and
pace they add to an otherwise straightforward
first-person shooter is not to be underestimated.
The surprising thing about Action Half-
Life 2 is that, despite the action movie
stylings, it’s a game in which death
comes easily. Every bullet is poten-
tially fatal. This means that your
moves, though showy, have to be
deployed carefully (or in despera-
tion) or you’ll just be a sitting duck.
The combination of brutal
lethality and acrobatic grace leads
to some of the most intense gunfights
in gaming. Action Half-Life 2 offers some-
thing for hardcore and casual shooter fans alike.
So if you’ve never tried an Action game before,
or even if you’re an old hand, sit down, boot it up
and take a nice relaxing dive through the air.
